Does makeup spark joy or insecurity?

lipsticksI enjoy listening the radio while I work.  Since I work from home most days, I get to listen to the station I love and crank it up loud!  But first thing in the morning they have more of a talk-show with a dash of music then later in the day switch to more music.  I love the morning show and the variety of people and opinions they have.  One in particular I can relate to as she is a curvy gal and discusses it and body-positivity a good bit.  There are plenty of things I don’t always agree with her on, however, and today I was a definitely torn on her discussion.  She mentioned that she wanted to come clean about how she felt like a liar for using her platform and saying she wore makeup for herself and not for others for several years now as part of her “love yourself” commentary.  She went on to say that she does in fact wear makeup to please others as she feels she gets a different reaction from people when she doesn’t wear makeup, but joked that she did not wear it for her husband.  Oddly enough, not long after that, a good friend was posting on FB that she couldn’t find any of her eye makeup as she just moved and was panicked that she was about to meet new ladies while attending her child’s school activities for Valentine’s Day.  Myself and several others tried to reassure her that she was beautiful without it as she was not one to wear it daily anyway.  In fact, I hardly ever saw her with makeup and she always seems so confident and and gorgeous to me!

All this got me thinking.  Were we all fooling ourselves?  Do we feel it necessary to wear makeup or do some of us really just enjoy it?  I certainly can’t speak for anyone but myself but I love putting makeup on and wear it everyday, whether I see people or not.  Again, most days I work from the comfort of home so it’s just me and the fur babies the majority of the day.  However, I will say I refuse to leave my house without any makeup on my face!  Even if I go to the gym, which legit is not much at this point, I always apply some mascara.  Not a full face, no foundation or cover up, just mascara to make me look like I am not asleep or the walking dead (the curse of fair skin and light hair with blue eyes).  Do I know one single person at the gym? Not unless you count my mom who has seen me in a hospital bed post c-section so she knows what it all really looks like.  Do I look like a troll in my workout clothes that are very unforgiving on my shape and get all sweaty and gross and splotchy?  Oh yeah…so why the mascara?  Is it because I think that swipe of color is going to somehow takeaway from the rest of the grossness post-workout?  I know I am blonde, but I really am not THAT dense.  I go workout with the knowledge I will look rough but I am there to improve how I feel about myself, not to impress the folks there that I may not ever see again and likely do not realize I even exist.  I swipe the mascara because I like it.  I don’t have to impress anyone BUT my husband who says I am beautiful with or without makeup (I know, he is so smart lol).

If anything, I feel that for me, makeup is not so much an armor as the radio gal said but a mood-adjuster.  I wear makeup when I am home alone because I like the way I feel with it on.  I sometimes feel insecure about a number of things and that brings down my confidence level, but because I leave my house in a nice outfit, my hair fixed, and of course makeup I feel ready to tackle things.  Which leads me to a great point, if you wear makeup to impress others are you also wearing nice clothes for others?  Do you comb your hair or even color it for others?  Do you wear your favorite perfume for others?  Do you wear jewelry for others?  For me, these are all a big fat no!  I do these things because I think showing I take pride in my appearance is a sign of who I am as a person.  I don’t completely have life figured out, but I was raised to act and look for the part you want but treat everyone you meet with respect and dignity.  I want to be successful, so I take time to look nice.  I am certainly not an expert on makeup application and not model material (not even for the curvy gals, I walk funny and am too silly).  And I color my hair because I was blonde the majority of my life then kids and hormones changed it to a dirty blonde and I just feel like a light blonde personality (it really is a state of mind just like my brunette friends are sultry and sassy)!  Now, if the occasion calls for it, I am fairly certain I could go to a meeting in my favorite pant suit with no makeup on my face and still handle it like a lady boss, but that’s because I know ultimately I am intelligent, I am brave, I deserve the best, and I go into all situations as prepared as humanly possible.

Now, I have loads of friends that never wear makeup and only own lip balm but they still take time to dress nice, even if it’s a good pair of jeans and a t-shirt.  These non-makeup-wearing friends also usually have their hair fixed, even if that means combed and straight.  Lots of friends who do or do not wear makeup wear jewelry to accent their mood and their outfit and last time I checked, a bracelet won’t add contour to your face and is it necessary to impress anyone?  I put perfume on because I like the smell, just like I put makeup on because I like it how makes my eyes pop!  My point is, most people have a series of things they do as part of their daily routine or some do certain things for special occasions only and all that matters to them, and to me, is if it makes US feel good, not everyone else.  If you work on the beauty you have inside that will shine on the outside every single time.  If you have self-doubt and feel bad about yourself for some reason, physical or otherwise, no amount of makeup will change your life.  Beauty truly is is the eye of the beholder and I feel beautiful even on the days I have less makeup on or have a breakout or I can keep going but you get it.  You have to FEEL beautiful before you can ever look beautiful.  I think to say you feel you must wear makeup for others is somehow actually more damaging than just wearing it.  Just like I feel that women who stress you shouldn’t wear makeup are showing their own negative opinion toward those who do.  I say do what makes you happy whether that includes makeup or not!  If you feel empowered by going nakey face DO IT!  If you feel empowered with a perfect winged liner and a bold lip DO IT!  And for the record, I don’t think there is anything wrong with wanting to look pretty for my husband but even less wrong with wanting to look pretty for me.  Makeup does not define me as a person so I truly don’t feel I wear it for others anymore than why I shower everyday.  Most folks wouldn’t know if I did or didn’t shower but I still do it so I feel clean and fresh!  See, there’s me only caring about what I think again!  My gosh I am selfish!

So, do you wear makeup, or any beauty enhancers, for you or for others and why?  Do you feel folks that wear makeup daily are superficial, why or why not?  I would love to hear some other viewpoints on this since I am not the only voice of women.  Perhaps I misunderstand the thinking here.  I think some open dialogue may shed some light on why we feel the way we do!  And just know this, you do not NEED makeup, hair color, or fancy clothes to be beautiful, you already are, even if you don’t know it yet!

Where has time gone?

I cannot believe I sit here next to my Christmas tree that is now bare underneath for one of the last times this year.  How is 2018 almost over?  How is there only four full days left of this year?  What a whirlwind it has been!  I suppose time flies when you’re having fun, right?

But honestly I feel all over the place!  I keep getting on the healthy train and then jumping right off every time my schedule goes awry, which has been a constant issue this year!  It’s all been great distractions but distractions nonetheless.  So much free traveling this year, and some business trips as well our annual family vacation to the beach.  I swear I have been on a plane more in the last two years than I have in my entire life, LITERALLY!  Before my business, I had only been on a plane once for a business trip with my old corporate job.  I have been on one three times this year and only paid for one of those flights thanks to my little home business!  I will be boarding another in just a few weeks to an invitation only leadership kickoff in San Antonio, Texas, to which of course I have never been.  We are staying at a beautiful resort and I cannot wait to see old friends, make new ones, and learn lots of awesome things to help myself and my team!  But in the meantime, I started back on the healthy train and am trying to be better about my own skincare routine.

So I got the full system again, but this time with the new Power Greens added in because let’s be real, I don’t eat a ton of veggies!  At least I know with this I can get all my veggies in as well as manage my cravings with the pea plant protein shakes!  I wish I had started this a tad bit sooner since I will see all my peers soon in Texas, but shoulda-coulda-woulda, right?

EMYX2292

So remember how I mentioned I was all over the place…so this is what has taken place with my skincare corner (and cosmetics I suppose).  I just love trying new things and we had so many new fun products this year!  I actually use everything pictured, just not all at once.  I tend to use the same regimen for about two weeks then switch one or two things up, especially as seasons or temps change.  Right now I am loving my super hydrating Hydra Fusion products!  They have the lightest but pleasant fragrance and feel so good on my skin and under makeup!  They were made with some wonderful ingredients to really boost plumpness and get needed hydration into your skin and retain it!  We have an under eye depuffer that has a ceramic tip and feels so good going on tired eyes before bed!  Also, the gel moisturizer is so light and airy but leaves skin so soft and supple!  We now also have a day lotion with SPF 50 that is great with or without makeup!  SPF is so important year round; just because it is cold out doesn’t mean the sun stopped having rays…be smart and use an SPF daily!  I love day creams and lotions with SPF added and our foundation and primer also has SPF so I feel confident going outside everyday that my face is protected!  I always add my Wrinkle Corrector to my skincare routine in the winter because it is super luxurious and acts as a wrinkle fighter PLUS moisturizer so it’s like a double whammy deal!  I love deals, don’t you?  And one of our game-changers this year…THE UNLIMITED LASH SERUM!!  Made with botanicals and peptides but free of those nasty things like parabens, sulfates, and phthalates and a fraction of the cost of other lash serums, this little number has been a life changer for some!  Women who haven’t had lashes in years for various reasons documented growth and can now feel confident batting their eyes!  I used it not only on my lashes but on my brows because they were so thin and sparse, partly because I am blonde but also from some ill-advised over-plucking!

Very soon, and I mean so soon I can taste it, we have even more new body and skincare advancements coming and I.can’t.wait!  The best part of it all, it’s all affordable enough the hubby won’t question you and you can stock up without feeling guilty!  Be sure to register on my site here you don’t miss any deals!

Out with the old and tired, in with the new and fresh!

What a quick summer!  But gosh if it wasn’t packed with fun and good memories!  I tried to be sure the kids had some fun and spent some time with friends this summer and also squeezed in some work!  Working from home is clearly fabulous, but if you let it, you can get wrapped up in it so you definitely have to find a good healthy balance of work and family!  I will say, I was so busy making memories and building my business that we have accumulated some excessive clutter and disorganization at the house, and not just with things but with ideas and thoughts, too!  Also, I may have cluttered up my gut and arteries with the kid-friendly diet we enjoyed all summer!

IMG_5731

So, today is the first day back to school for the kids and it honestly is a bit bittersweet for me.  I certainly need to gain some control and order back and I know they are both excited to be seeing friends and making new ones, but it’s only been a few hours and Bruno and I already are feeling unnerved by the extreme quiet in this house!  Also, it was a another benchmark day for our son as he walked through the doors of middle school for this first time today.  My, how time has flown by!  My little bald baby is now growing into an adolescent young man.  How did this happen??  And our sweet baby girl is really coming into a beautiful yet spunky personality!  I am so blessed to be able to enjoy these summers and after school now.  Sunday marked the 2nd anniversary of when I presented my notice to my old employer, and while I remember the office, employees, and work, I find it difficult to remember not being home with the kids now.

IMG_6473

So with the passing of the anniversary and the kids going back to school, I decided it was time to let go of some old and tired things and habits, and start fresh and new!  First things first, my health!  Again, we had a very kid-friendly diet this summer and I just returned from our national convention where we certainly were enjoying the food and cocktails!  My waist is not visible and my legs are swollen and I know very well that 1. it is totally my fault 2. it was so worth it but 3. I need to start making a few small changes to fix the issues and feel better!  So while packing up Abby’s lunch last night, I also prepared my overnight oats to start on a good note today.  Along with actually having breakfast this morning, I felt like I needed a reboot so I added in a great cleanse to kick off a healthy regimen and lots and lots of water!  I did take a waist measurement and pounds and plan to check again after the gentle three-day cleanse.

img_6483.jpg

Once I am done with the cleanse I will begin the rest of the Metabolism Boost Regimen and make some adjustments to my eating habits but don’t intend to follow a diet.  My good friend and health coach agrees that dieting is setting yourself up to fail while slowly learning better habits and just being mindful of what you put in will yield longer last results.  However, I also know that a little natural boost from the products on the regimen will only help me on this path to feeling and looking healthier!  And of course, I can’t forget the water!

Now that I have my health plan mapped out, I need to de-clutter my schedule and my brain which, oddly enough, I don’t feel prepared to do until I de-clutter my home.  I will be choosing a room and common area to work on each week.  It’s scary to figure out what to let go, but one thing I have always been great at is looking ahead, not backwards. While some things may seem hard to let go of, the feeling of doing so it quite freeing!  Like you are not only ridding of the physical clutter around you but letting go of the clutter in your mind at the same time.  Less clutter in your mind means less stress and more productivity!  I will say, I have doubts on most items I want to let go of.  What if I need that even though we haven’t touched it in a year?  What if I lose 50 pounds and can get back into those jeans from high school?  What if body glitter comes back in style?  What if I need to read that book again, even though I have read it twice and haven’t grabbed it in two years?  These are only a few random thoughts I get as I plan to de-clutter, but I will stop myself and say if it is not a tax document we need to hold onto and has not been touched in six months, it is time to let it go, let it go, it can’t hold me back anymore!  Yes, I have a young daughter and just went there.  I also like to set a goal of one room and one common area a week so I don’t overwhelm myself by pretending I will get it all done immediately!  When we get overwhelmed, we delay and defer!

IMG_6077

I can’t just ignore my business while I am working on my health and home, so I will also plan to purge my products (I honestly don’t buy much inventory as we aren’t required to, but always seem to earn things or may have a leftover of a bundle here and there).  I already started that process but have a long way to go.  Once I slim that down I can begin clearing my office space that my husband so graciously built for me and I haven’t used in months!  In the meantime, I will organize my notebooks and be sure I am properly updating my planner with all appointments, not just my normal weekly tasks.  I am great at my Sunday night planner update, but have been horrible at adding appointments as they come in!  With our current incentive of a $10 startup for new reps, I definitely need to get organized and fast!  We have had some very explosive growth more quickly than I ever imagined and I want to be sure to support these folks as best I can!

So, now for the big question…will you be de-cluttering this month?  If so, what will you purge?  Old junk, clothes you never wear, negative thoughts, bad habits?  I would love it if you shared with me by commenting!  Maybe you will inspire me or someone else to do the same!  And be sure to share and subscribe!

Summer Shenanigans

Wow, it has been a while!  But time flies when you’re having fun!  What a wild year it has been so far.  I can’t believe it’s already the middle of summer.  The fun started with an all expense paid cruise for two to Bermuda on the huge and beautiful Anthem of the Seas!  It’s amazing to have been able to treat my hubby to this as it was only a week after our 16th Wedding Anniversary!

cruisedinner

And it was just for doing what I love!  It was definitely a fun and amazing experience for our first cruise!  And we ported in Bermuda for a night and walked around the island as well as took a boat tour that had a lot of rum involved!  Needless to say, I felt like a pirate after that!  We also got a kiss under the Moongate to make a wish as it was legend there it meant a long and happy life together! And that is our ship in the background!  Part of it, anyway.

cruisekissing

I was super shocked to receive recognition as well, as you can see by the look on my face!  I was in the top ten of reps who earned the trip for new title advancements, which means my team is fabulous and they really deserved the award!  But I was very happy to accept it on their behalf and it was wonderful to share that moment with my hubby!  That’s him in the hat behind me!

cruiseaward

After that whirlwind five-night cruise, we returned to reality to wrap up May.  We had end of year activities for the kids including my son’s graduation from elementary school!  I can’t believe I have a child entering middle school!  It even felt weird typing that out!  But he received several awards at his ceremony and was in the top two in his class for math and science!  Proud parent moment for sure!  We are so proud of him!  And our baby girl isn’t a baby anymore!  She is still in elementary but growing so fast!

lastdayoffifthgrade

Speaking of awards, my President’s Recognition Program Luncheon was the day after the Fifth Grade Ceremony and I unexpectedly cleaned up!  I ended up with seven new statuettes, some for sales and some for the team, as well as a certificate for my sales title increase, and a few other goodies for different achievements.  It was a wonderful and heart-filling day!  My mentor even drove all the way up to be with me!  That just made it even more special!

After school let out, we have enjoyed some time at the lake, some time at the pool, and some time with friends, with a little work mixed in of course!  It definitely is a perk to be able to set your own schedule and hit the lake on a Tuesday at 11am!  No crowds!

lakeday

I will say this, I normally use our DEET Free Expedition aerosol spray for a bug repellent and sunblock, but at the lake it is super windy so I grabbed one of the DEET Free Bug Guard Plus Lotions and oh-em-gee is this stuff amazeballs!  My daughter has very sensitive skin and we have had a hard time finding sun block that didn’t break her out and my son is so fair-skinned he normally burns no matter how much we reapply.  But, we spent three hours at the lake one afternoon and she did not get any reapplication and was not burnt at all AND didn’t have any rash from the SPF!  My son got reapplied once in the three hour time and didn’t get burnt (seriously he is much more pale than the rest of us so I didn’t want to risk it).  The bottle does say waterproof for 80 minutes, so to make it stretch the way we did is a huge deal for him and his pastiness!  Most sunblock that says 80 minutes doesn’t even last 30 on him in the water!  The fact is smells good and also repels mosquitoes and no-see-ums as well as many other icky creatures is a plus!

bugguardlotion

Besides our water play I have enjoyed some fresh made French Toast courtesy of my son the budding chef!  He also has whipped up grilled cheese for his sister a few times!  They have gotten along brilliantly this summer to be together so much!

breakfast

He has weaseled his way out of several errands and deliveries but my baby girl enjoys riding around with me!  In fact, it’s only during the summer months that she gets to do that with me as well as going to my mentor’s meetings.  During the school year it is just too late for her to be out so I always promise to take her during the summer.  The last time we went down, there were some storms but she was able to see her first rainbow in person ever, and it was a double rainbow at that!  She enjoys being around all my teammates and adores my mentor so I love when I can take her with me.

I was able to help my momma after her knee surgery and my teammates and customers were amazing and patient with me.  She of course rocked that surgery is already released from physical therapy and about to take her second trip to Gulfport post-op!  Her surgery was only in mid-May and she has already traveled TWICE!  It was such a blessing to not worry about a job and just be with my mom since she has always been there for me.  My sister was a huge help, especially the first week, and of course Dad was there in the evenings to take care of her and took her to some appointments because he wanted to.  Other than that, it’s been business as usual working from home most days and getting out to talk to folks others.  The cat always seems irritated with me when I am on the phone a lot during the day; this is his face all day until my hubby gets home!

tango

We were able to catch a few Braves game this year as a family and we love that!  One was 15 innings, though, and we were delirious by the time it was over!  Fun memories, though!

ballpark

We still have a little bit of summer left, but it sure is flying by.  I will say, my second summer as a work-from-home-momma has been much smoother and more fun!  I will try to not be so delayed on my next installment of Beauty Boss Momma, but glad to catch you all up!

Dry and bitter…

No, that is not my attitude!  Although I realize I have been gone for a minute, I am actually hydrated and sweet!  But the weather outside is frightful, dry, and you guessed it, bitter cold!  Some folks love the winter months and I normally do until we hit single digits, especially for more than one day!  We even got snow-in Georgia-in December.  That just doesn’t happen.

IMG_1980

I grew up in the south where December may still yield short sleeves and flip flops so when we got over a foot of snow before Christmas I was in shock!  And even worse than dealing with our power going out and the endless amount of wet clothes the kids kept throwing off is the extreme dry skin!

I normally have oily skin so if my skin gets dry, you know the air is bone dry.  Weird how cold wetness can make the air feel so dry!  But as you burn fires and run the furnace indoors, that sucks the moisture right out of the air!  So how to you combat it?  I mean, we can’t have dry skin because dry skin leads to premature wrinkles and who needs that?

A non-drying cleanser with no soap and no alcohol is a great start.  This is my favorite here.  Then, this is a great time for a gentle but regular exfoliating to keep any dry flaky skin at bay.  I love this daily scrub and it is very gentle but definitely creates a soft smooth face!  Plus, a good exfoliation only aides in the use of treatments and moisturizers.  These items can get soaked up by dry or dead skin before making it to your face so exfoliation is double important!

Cleansers

After a soft cleanse, I have switched up my routine to the Power Serum to help not only even tone and minimize pores but to give my treatments and moisturizer a boost!  I am loving the Advanced Wrinkle Corrector right now because while most products don’t do double-duty, this does!  It acts as a clinical treatment AND a moisturizer all in one jar!  And to be so awesome, it’s not harsh and doesn’t have a terrible medicine smell!

Of course the whole routine is complete with the Eye Lift Pro to keep my lids lifted and those crows feet at bay!  I hope you are staying warm and enjoying the weather like I am, from inside by the fireplace with some hot coffee early and chilled wine later!  Maybe if I change it to a margarita I can pretend I’m at the warm beach??

Smooth like a baby’s bottom!

My skin is sensitive, combination, and generally just aggravated with me.  I love to try different foundations all the time, spend time outside, rub my face when I am thinking really hard, and my diet is, well, very poor!  Because of this abuse to my face, I do try to care for it by using gentle soap-free cleansers, this one is my favorite.  I also have carefully selected a skincare regimen to keep my skin moisturized while also attacking some of the signs of aging that I brought on with years of tanning and smoking, both of which I no longer do!  I love my AHA cream every few days, my Line Eraser, and my Ultimate.  I also love to exfoliate using my gentle Refining Daily Scrub 2-3 times per week.  It’s perfect for all skin types and the little beads are rounded so they don’t irritate the sensitive skin on the face.  But I was saddened this morning to find I had run out of the RDS even though I thought I surely could squeeze a few more uses out!  You only need a pea size for your face, so I assumed I could push some down but apparently I had used it all.  I had that tube over a month, but still, sadness….

refining daily scrub

While I have come to love my RDS because of the gentleness, I was pleased to find I had a tube of the Clearskin Pore Penetrating Invigorating Scrub in the shower!  I had totally forgotten about this little gem when I started using the Anew Clean items.  But the invigorating scrub is just that…INVIGORATING!  It definitely feels more scrubby or almost sand-like than the clean line, but it also leaves this cool sensation on your skin when you rinse it off!  So I put a pea size of this in my hand and gently rubbed it on my clean face.  Amazing!  Super soft feel and that burst of cool after the scrubbies is the perfect combination to refresh you, especially in the morning!

invigorating scrub

Now, exfoliating is serious business and you can actually harm your face by doing it too often.  Also, you want to rub longer, not harder, if you feel you are in need of a good sloughing.  Rubbing too hard will only irritate your skin and leave it blotchy and tender.  While exfoliation is good to get dead skin off and leave your skin smooth, you need to follow it with a great moisturizer as it can be drying.  Drying leads to lines.  Lines make you sad!
